FAQ

Via Ferrata is a type of climbing that follows a set route, where fixed equipment is installed into the the rock to assist the participant in ascension. This fixed gear guarantees a higher margin of safety and grants access to anyone regardless of experience or knowledge.

No, you don’t. Complete novices can do it as long as they can overcome any fear of heights and have a good level of fitness. Route 1 is designed to accommodate all skill levels and abilities.

You do need a good level of fitness. A tour goes for about 4.5 hours so you should be able to walk/hike for at least that length of time over hilly terrain.

Footwear needs to be sturdy, with lace up and closed toes. We recommend hiking, approach or trail running shoes. Sneakers can be worn but be sure the sole is stiff and has good tread as you will be standing on metal rungs and walking on rocky trails.

A backpack between a couple of people is a great idea. It means you can carry essentials like a bottle of water, snacks, rain jacket, hat, etc. We recommend a day pack that is no bigger than 30 litres.

Absolutely! In fact, you will kick yourself if you don’t as there are so many great photo spots. However, please be warned that if you drop it we cannot retrieve it for you, so you bring it at your own risk. We recommend you have your phone/camera on a lanyard that you can attach to your harness or pack, this will ensure you don’t lose it. We have RockWire lanyards for sale at the shop if you don’t have one.

Due to permit regulations, insurance conditions and safety, RockWire’s via ferrata at Mt Buller can only be completed with one of RockWire’s trained and qualified climbing guides.

Helmets, harnesses, lanyards and all safety equipment is provided by RockWire. All gear is certified to international standards, maintained, cleaned, regularly checked and approved for Via Ferrata use. Personal gear cannot be used.

Bookings are done online either through the RockWire or Mt Buller websites: https://www.rockwire.com.au or https://www.mtbuller.com.au/summer.
